For knee surgeons, achieving the right balance remains one of the most complex aspects of the procedure. Every knee presents a different combination of anatomy and soft-tissue characteristics, and ligament behavior can change throughout the range of motion.

Since its introduction in 2021, Newton has been used in nearly 7,000 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) cases, empowering surgeons with objective, real-time measurement of soft-tissue behavior during surgery.

“You can gather objective joint alignment and range of motion measurements when Newton is combined with GPS navigation,” said Nicholas Abidi, MD, orthopedic surgeon from Golden State Orthopedics and Spine. “This gives the surgeon more information to consider in addition to the clinical picture and patient demand level when deciding on the final knee construct. Limb alignment can be adjusted to kinematic planning or functional alignment, which I believe is dictated by patient anatomy. The goal being patient demand matched knee balance, better proprioception and consistent functional improvement post-op.”

Today, Newton is used in well over half of GPS Knee cases globally, reflecting its growing role within Advita Ortho’s knee technology platform.

Research Is Expanding What the Data Can Tell Us

Newton’s clinical use has been accompanied by a growing body of research into objective soft-tissue measurement and its potential role in personalized TKA.

More than 50 publications and scientific presentations have examined Newton and related soft-tissue management approaches. In 2026, peer-reviewed research has taken further investigation, examining how intraoperative measurements may contribute to understanding the individual knee and to surgical planning. The research spans areas including dynamic alignment, soft-tissue behavior and individualized planning, with emerging work also exploring the potential role of machine learning.

Together, this peer-reviewed research points to an evolving role for intraoperative data. The question is no longer simply how to measure soft-tissue behavior, but what surgeons may be able to learn from those measurements and how that information might inform individualized approaches to TKA.

For surgeons, achieving the right balance in a knee replacement remains one of the most complex aspects of the procedure...

“For surgeons, achieving the right balance in a knee replacement remains one of the most complex aspects of the procedure,” said James Huddleston, MD, of Stanford University. “While real-time, objective data across the range of motion from the Newton solution already provides a clearer understanding of each patient’s knee and supports more reproducible decisions, this body of research helps establish the foundation for translating those insights into self-generated patient-specific planning.”

For surgeons already using Newton, the growing evidence base adds to experience gained across thousands of procedures.

Newton Is Becoming an Integral Part of the Advita Knee Platform

The evolution is also visible in the technology itself. In June 2026, Advita Ortho announced the first clinical use in Japan of its next-generation knee replacement platform, bringing together Activit-E® vitamin E-stabilized polyethylene, Advita GPS™ navigation and Newton in a unified workflow. The initial procedures were performed by Hiroshi Watanabe, MD, PhD, at Tokorozawa Hakushokai Hospital.

The platform brings alignment, soft-tissue balance and other intraoperative information together in a surgeon-controlled workflow, reflecting Advita’s approach to personalized TKA.

As Dr. Watanabe noted following the first clinical use in Japan, “Every patient presents a unique combination of anatomy, soft-tissue characteristics and functional expectations.”

That philosophy is central to Newton’s evolution. The technology is becoming part of a broader surgical workflow designed to provide surgeons with additional information to consider before and throughout TKA.

The Approach Is Gaining Recognition

Newton’s evolution has also received recognition beyond its clinical and research applications.

In December 2025, Newton received the Innovation Award in the Soft Tissue Balancing category at the Medical Device Network Excellence Awards. The award recognized the technology’s approach to soft-tissue balancing through real-time ligament measurements.

A growing number of patents also support the innovation behind Newton and Advita’s broader approach to personalized joint replacement. Most recently, in February 2026, Advita Ortho was awarded a U.S. patent for an AI-enabled surgical planning framework designed to prioritize key clinical factors based on patient anatomy and surgeon preference. The patent represents another step in the development of data-driven technologies designed to support more consistent and personalized surgical planning.

The recognition adds another milestone to Newton’s first five years, alongside its growing clinical use, research and continued expansion.

Five Years of Progress. A Foundation for What’s Next.

Nearly 7,000 cases. Five years of clinical experience. An expanding body of peer-reviewed research. A next-generation platform. And growing recognition of the approach to soft-tissue balancing pioneered by Newton.

Together, these milestones reflect the evolution of Newton and the growing role of objective intraoperative information in understanding the individual knee.

The next chapter is already underway.
